Bonnyville is home to the largest in-situ thermal oil sands projects in North America, as well as one of the largest conventional heavy oil deposits in Canada, with in-place oil resources from the Cold Lake deposit of 201 billion barrels.

Bonnyville also borders the Athabasca oil sands to our north, and sits upon a large natural gas field that was discovered in 1947.

Approximately 80% of recoverable oil sands in Alberta is through in-situ production, with less than 20% recoverable by mining. In-situ operations result in much less land disturbance, eliminates the need for tailings ponds, and land reclamation takes significantly less time than for surface mining operations.

In-situ operations are believed to produce more bitumen than mining in the near future, and the Bonnyville area is strategically positioned to Fuel the Future!
